Much like Dragons Den, only for the fashion industry, Fashion Star is a competition series consisting of 14 contestants who compete to win deals with top department stores, H&M, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Each week they take in their mentors advice (mentors include Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie, and John Varvatos) and create innovative and trendy designs. Competing in threes, at the end of the week, they put on a fashion show combining all three collections. Elle Macpherson hosts the show, guiding the designers and communicating back and forth between judges and buyers. The mentors give their criticism, which may or may not influence the buyers decision, and then the designers turn to face the buyers. The buyers make a deal if they feel the product is right for their brand and would succeed in their stores.
The series premiered on March 13th, and for the past few weeks has been receiving mixed reviews – some media experts love it, and some feel it’s too much. Personally, whether its extravagant or not, I love the concept of it. I think its great that these talented designers are not well known to the public, and are granted the chance to have their designs sold in top stores. I love watching the runway show, and then guessing which buyers will place an offer based on their brands image. The only downside is that you don’t see much of the design process, because the show runs fairly quickly. I think if they had more than 3 of the 14 contestants compete at one time, then we may see more of the concepts and theory behind their designs. However, if you’re interested in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, than this is the show for you!
The show airs Tuesday nights on NBC and MUCH.
