Lucian’s Fall/Winter 2012 runway show was the perfect opener to World MasterCard Fashion Week here in Toronto, held at the glorious Royal York Hotel in the ballroom. Occurring on Monday, March 12, Lucian set the bar high when it comes to true Canadian talent, mastering meticulous craftsmanship perfectly. I had the pleasure of viewing this event first hand, sitting second row behind the lovely Lisa Tant, and many other front row attendees like MTV’s Aliya Jasmine, and Degrassi’s Charlotte Arnold.
The dark and abstract collection is called “Nature’s Art in Symmetry”, as Matis says “Nature’s an infinite source for inspiration.” The gowns were all sewn by hand, and when you look at the gorgeous lace macramé, you will be awestruck. Black Swan was a common theme that comes to mind when watching the designs swoon by, featuring lilac tinted grey tule underneath, and black-on-black garments with textured detailing with the use of feathers, snakeskin, and lace. Accessories included feathered bunny ears and nail decor, with accenting dark smokey eyes. My favourites were the forest green tinged black feathered skirts, the floor length coats with snakeskin collar and pocket lining, and the peplum waisted crochet laced dress.
Although the show consisted extensive work and wonderful edgy pieces, the buzz was more concerned about the visible pasties on the young models, which unfortunately stood out amongst the sheer coverings. Nonetheless, it was a glamourous night, celebrating Canadian fashion with champagne and socialites before beginning the 13th Toronto Fashion Week.
